Developing new skills during lockdown

STUDENTS from the University’s Business School tested their creative skills by marketing a Cheshire-based travel, fitness and team energiser company during lockdown.

Here, two of the group share their experiences.

“Make the most of any practical opportunities”

Rosie Machin
Rosie Machin

My name is Rosie Machin. I have just finished my first year, here at the University, studying Digital Marketing.

I was a little bit lost as to how to use my time productively and wanted to be able to use the time to expand my knowledge of the industry. After attending various online courses and webinars, a fantastic opportunity to assist with the marketing efforts of a local adventure travel company presented itself!

I was really keen to get involved, as I was concerned that I had no marketing experience to transfer into the real world – this was perfect. The team met for the first time a week or so later (on Zoom!), and it was lovely to get to work with others that had the same interests as myself. The task itself was to assist with the rebrand of the company, and we were all assigned our separate roles and responsibilities. I quickly realised that I have a strong passion for writing and producing content, and this allowed me to get to grips with ‘Mailchimp’ – an email platform for small businesses, as well as producing various blogs and assisting with the creation of an adventure trip brochure.

The whole experience has taught me essential team working skills, as well as much more industry specific skills, such as using Canva, a design tool, that I mainly used for producing social media content. In addition to this, I have also learned the basics of using a Customer Relationship Management database, and how this connects with ‘Mailchimp’. I have really enjoyed the project, as it has enabled me to put into practice some of the marketing theory I learned in first year, and apply it to a real business. I think the whole experience has been a fantastic launch pad that I needed to understand my strengths, and use the knowledge I have gained to be able to guide myself to a job that I love, in the future.

I really urge everyone to make the most of any practical opportunities that are presented to them, as they will allow you to gain hands on experience, and learn more in your chosen field.

“The project has helped me to decide what I would like to do after my degree”

Jonathan Edge
Jonathon Roberts

I’m Jonathon Roberts and I started working with EDGE Travel Worldwide in March helping with their Social Media Marketing, specifically focusing on promoting the UK Adventure Trips which the brand offers. I’m studying Business Management and Marketing Management.

This has really helped me to develop my skills in Social Media Marketing as I was able to put into practice what I have learnt in my Digital Marketing module which I completed this year. During the COVID-19 lockdown, I also got involved with helping to rebrand the company into three brands; EDGE Travel Worldwide (focusing on UK and international adventure trips), Performance to Summit (focusing on online and face-to-face fitness sessions, health and wellbeing workshops, UK and international guided running, and mountain biking trips), and TEAM Engage (focusing on tailor-made team energisers for corporate, sports club and charity organisations). During the rebrand project which is still ongoing, I have been able to develop my skills further by creating a Marketing Plan for each of the brands, helping to create content for the websites for each brand, and I have now started helping support the three brands with their Search Engine Optimisation both on-page and off-page optimisation.

This project has been beneficial as I have been able to showcase my skills which I have developed from completing online courses and in my studies for my degree in Business Management and Marketing Management. The opportunity offered by Dave Pickles from EDGE Travel Worldwide has been a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and I am so glad that I decided to apply to get involved in this fantastic project. The project has also helped me to decide what I would like to do after my degree, and I have also during Lockdown created my own freelancing website where I’m helping Small and Medium sized businesses in Cheshire like EDGE Travel Worldwide with their WordPress Web Design and Search Engine Optimisation.
